Week 11

Welcome to the last week of Term 1

It is hard to believe how fast this term has gone! We have seen tremendous growth in the student’s learning potential, confidence and independence.

Project Compassion

Please continue to help OLOR to support Caritas Australia during the season of Lent. In every OLOR classroom, there is a Project Compassion box on the prayer table. We encourage each child to bring a monetary donation. This donation can make a real difference. Together we can help the poorest of the poor live a life of dignity. We can help them become self-sufficient so they do not need to rely on charity. For $75 OLOR can provide a family with one piglet and training on how to take care of the pig, allowing them to generate a sta- ble source of income in the Philippines. Please go to https://www.caritas.org.au/donate/online-donation?DonationCode=PC to donate online.

Absentee Notes

If your child has been absent from school through the term and it is yet to be explained, please send a letter or email stating the reason for the absence and date to your child’s teacher immediately. This is a legal requirement for the class rolls.

Design and Make Task

A reminder that students will be completing their design and make task this week for Science. If the materials can be sent into school on Monday and Tuesday this week that would be greatly appreciated. We will be building on Thursday. Please don’t worry if you are unable to collect a large amount of materials. There will also be leftover material on the day they can work with.

Easter Hat Parade

A reminder that children are asked to bring a gold coin donation to support Project Compassion.

Readers

ALL Home Readers are to be returned to the classroom teacher on Monday as Mrs Walter would like the teachers to return them by Wednesday, as she needs to check library stock. We strongly suggest that parents make use of their local library during the holidays and encourage shared reading (parent reading to the child) as well as the children reading. It is important for the children to continue with their reading over the holidays, as this will continue to help their reading development.

We are asking parents to collect recyclable materials from around the house over the course of this week and send this to school on Monday 3/4 /17 and Tuesday 4/4/17. The task will be completed on Wednesday or Thursday of Week 11.

We would like the children to demonstrate their own knowledge, understanding and creativity with this task. To limit any pre planning or ideas being completed at home, we will not be explaining this task to parents. The design and make task is to be completed at school as it will go towards their assessment grade for Science.

Please don’t worry if you are unable to collect a large amount of materials. There will also be leftover material on the day they can work with.

Examples of materials include:

Cross Country

  • The Cross Country will take place this Thursday 30/3/17. Year 1 and Kinder will have their mini cross country at 2:05pm on the school oval. Then after the run, you can take your little one and go home early. We need to be out of the school by 2:35pm ish so the normal afternoon school dismissal is not interrupted. You can also go straight to sibling’s classrooms and collect your older children if you are leaving early. We kindly ask you to inform your child’s teacher if you take your child home early. NO sign in or sign out is necessary at the office. Thank you.
  • Students are to wear their sports uniform for the day. If it is cancelled they are to wear their normal school uniform.
  • Due to the unpredictable weather a decision could be made last minute to cancelled the cross country. The alert will be sent through the Skoolbag App.

Skoolbag App

  • HAVE YOU DOWNLOADED THE Skoolbag App YET?
  • Skoolbag is the ultimate school to parent communication tool. This School Mobile App provides schools with an easy way to tell parents and carers important information as soon as it happens example: school news, event reminders, cancellations and much more.
  • To install it, just search for our school name “Our Lady of the Rosary Kellyville” in either the Apple App Store, Google Play Store or on Windows.

OLOR IS NUT FREE

  • We have an increasing number of children in our school who suffer from an anaphylaxis reaction to certain foods etc. but in particular, nuts. To assist in our duty of care for these children, direct nut products or products that list nuts as an actual ingredient, eg. peanut butter and nutella, are not permitted at Our Lady of the Rosary School. Additionally, we will continue to ask that children not to share their food.
  • If you are sending in a treat for your child’s birthday to share with the class, we strongly advise you to check the ingredients listed. If it contains nuts or may have nuts we will not share the food with any child, including those who are not recorded as having an allergy.
  • The health and safety of the children is a priority. Anything containing nut products will be sent back home at the end of the day.

Literacy tips

Below is a great read from NSW Department of Education on Spelling: Tips for Parents. A wonderful support for our children. http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/parents/k6spelling.html

Winter Uniform Changeover

  • Due to the variation in temperatures over the last 2 weeks and with more up and down temperatures forecast for the next few weeks, students will be allowed to continue to wear their FULL SUMMER UNIFORM if they wish when they return after the school holidays on Wednesday 26 April up until Friday 12 May.
  • Those students who wish to transition into their winter uniform after the holidays are al- lowed, of course, to do so.
  • Please note, it is either SUMMER OR WINTER and not a combination of both.

Compulsory School Attendance

Due to Holy Week falling in the middle of the school holiday, we are asking all students to not share chocolate eggs with one another during Lent. This is to show our respect and love for Jesus who made the ultimate sacrifice for us all. If your child would like to share a little Easter treat they could share something on the last day of school. We are asking that it be wrapped in cellophane or packaging, so that it can be eaten on Easter Sunday. Thank you so much for your support with this.

It might be a lovely gesture to put their little chocolate egg contribution into the Project Compassion boxes for those less fortunate and make them aware of the meaning of Lent.

Week 8 13/3- 17/3

Early Years Testing will continue this week.

Grade Representative

Thank you to Erica Van Heerden, Sam Sirry, Carolina Orts and Kate Murray for being our Year One Parent Representatives. Thank you to the many parents who volunteered for this role. We are so fortunate to have so much support.

Contact Information Note

Last week we sent home a white note for parents regarding contact details. Please return this note ASAP as the information needs to be passed along to the parent representatives.

Personal Belongings

Many students have misplaced belongings such as hats, jackets, drink bottles etc. We ask that you please have a good look in your child’s bag, as children often place their belongings into the wrong bag by accident. Your child may unknowingly have another students’ belongings in the bottom of their bag. Please ensure that your child’s name is clearly marked on all of their possessions.

Toys

We have started to notice children are bringing a considerable amount of toys to school with them and they are unable to fit them into their bags properly. We kindly ask that they only bring one toy to school. Children are misplacing their toys and becoming upset as they have lost them. If you do send a toy, please clearly mark it with their name.

Photo Day Notes

Notes for photo day were sent home this week. Please return these notes to your class teacher. Photo day is on Friday 31st March.

School Banking

This will resume on THursday 9 March at 8:15am in the school library

PBS4L

PBS4L was taught to the children at OLOR in 2016. Each fortnight this year OLOR will be reteaching a PBS4L skill. The skill we will be focusing on for the next two weeks is Active Listening. Talk to you children about the importance of this skill at home and at school. Ask them if they are being active listeners in the classroom and what it should look, feel and sound like.

THANK YOU!

Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend the Catholic Schools Week Liturgy and our open classrooms today to observe Year One’s reading groups. We understand not all parents could attend due to work commitments.

We appreciate all the positive feedback about the children and the activities they were completing today. It was wonderful to see the children interacting with their parents in the classroom.

So walk up to the oval around 2pm. Then after the run,  you are able  to take your little one and go home early.
