Term 2 Week 2

Parent Helpers

A note will be sent home Week 3 to let parents know of the days each class would like assistance with parent helpers for 1:1 Reading with the children. We love parent helpers and volunteers BUT as you all realise if you would like to participate in your child’s experiences and learning at school, you must have completed the “Working with children”. This course can be completed online.

Term Overview

Please be on the look out for the term’s overview. Coming your way very soon. This will have the terms topics and focus in each KLA/Libray/Sport Days/General Year One information. This is a wonderful way you can have rich discussions with your child about their learning.

Uniform

Students will be allowed to continue to wear their FULL SUMMER UNIFORM if they wish when they return after the school holidays on Wednesday 26 April up until Friday 12 May.Those students who wish to transition into their winter uniform after the holidays are allowed, of course, to do so. Please note, it is either SUMMER OR WINTER and not a combination of both.

Readers

Readers begin this week! It is important to read with your child every night as this will assist them in their learning. Please view the reading days tab above to see what day your child is reading. We ask that the readers be kept in their bag everyday so allow for students to use these when we have parent helpers.

Topic Talks

This term we are encouraging the children to develop their confidence in speaking in front of an audience. We have prepared weekly topic talks to guide them in this. We ask students to plan a short talk that they will present to their reading group each week. You can find the scehdule in the tabs above.

Students will work on their topic talk at home during the week and then the follow week will present in class. E.g. Student will work on the week 2 topic at home and present this during week 3.

We ask that all topic talks be brought in on Mondays to ensure the children have their talk at school for their allocated day.

ANZAC Liturgy

This Thursday OLOR will be having an ANZAC Liturgy. It will be held after recess at 11:30am on the Netball Courts. We kindly ask that parents don’t enter the school until after the end of recess as the students are all moving to their classrooms and we need to keep them safe.

We wish Mrs Earl safe travels!! Mrs Judy Lagudi will be taking Mrs Earl’s class for the first two weeks of school. Mrs Earl is very lucky to be joining Bishop Vincent on a pilgrimage overseas. We look forward to Mrs Earl returning in Week 3 to share stories of her adventure.

We look forward to seeing the children on Wednesday 26th April

Holiday Recount

During the first week back at school the children will be writing a recount of their school holidays. It would be greatly appreciated if you could write down two or three short dot points of an activity they did when on holidays.

Example:

  • Natalie went to the movies to see Finding Nemo with her Mum, Dad and sister Lisa.
  • Natalie went to the beach with her Aunty Karen and cousins Tom and James.

This will assist the teachers to prompt the children with ideas for their writing, as they often say they forget what they did in the holidays. If you could please put this in their bag for the first day back.

Thank you for your assistance.

Holiday Activities

As you enjoy your holidays and spend time with your children, we ask you to assistance them in continuing their learning throughout the holidays. Below are some activities that can easily be completed with your children. Please note this is not compulsory, but encouraged to assist their learning.

Literacy: Writing

Encourage your child to write whenever the opportunity arises. A short recount of an activity they have done. Another activity we regularly do in class in Draw and Write. Ask your child to draw a picture then they write about the picture.

Reminding them to use:

  • Correct letter formation- making writing neat and legible.
  • Punctuation – Capital letters, full stops, commas, question/quotation/exclamation marks.
  • Making sentences interesting – Describing words, adding details.
  • Varying sentence beginnings.
  • Check spelling

Ensuring children constantly stop and re-read what they have written to ensure meaning in their writing has been maintained.

Reading

  • Read their library books or visit the local library and encourage students to have a positive association with reading. If possible, avoid having students read off an IPad as the light can affect their eyesight and they use paper books in years one to four.
  • Alternate the texts you read with them, include newspapers, map, pamphlet, street sign, novel or picture book.
  • It is important that parents are aware that just because your child is able to read by themselves doesn’t mean that parents should stop reading to their children. This is a critical skill children need in older years to visualize the text being read to them. Parents reading to their children are able to model fluency and expression. There are a considerable number of children that forget to use.
  • When reading with children ask them questions about the book. The most important aspect of reading is the conversation with your child about the book!!! Before Reading, During Reading and After Reading.
  • A reminder that students have access to Bug Club, Mathletics and Studyladder at home.

Mathematics

  • Counting forwards and backwards to 20, 50, 100. Vary this depending on your child’s ability. This can be done in the car or bath time.
  • Quick doubles. What is double 2…..double 4…..double 7 etc
  • Give your child a number and ask them what is 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, 10 less
  • Using post-it notes. Ask them to record 2, 3 or 4 digit numbers. Build a collection and have them read these throughout the holidays. They can even work on placing these in order from smallest to largest.
  • Skip Counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s (depending on their ability).
  • Writing number to ensure no reversals of numbers.

We hope you have a happy and safe holidays! We look forward to seeing the children again in Term 2.
