Term 2, Week 6

WINTER UNIFORM

Just a reminder we are in FULL WINTER SCHOOL UNIFORM now. The children look very smart and warm as they come to school each morning. Could you please make sure all clothing is labelled.

OLOR IS NUT FREE

We have an increasing number of children in our school who suffer from an anaphylaxis reaction to certain foods etc. but in particular, nuts. To assist in our duty of care for these children, direct nut products or products that list nuts as an actual ingredient, eg. peanut butter and nutella, are not permitted at Our Lady of the Rosary School. Please also keep this vigilance when sending in birthday cakes, cupcakes and other confectionary for whatever purpose. Additionally, we will continue to ask that children not to share their food.

PUBLIC HOLIDAY

Monday 12 June -Queens Birthday Public Holiday—NO SCHOOL

FRIDAY TREAT DAY CANTEEN

A reminder that every Friday is “Treat Day” in the canteen should you wish to purchase an ice block or drink. Please ensure that your child has their spending money to avoid any tears.

LITERACY

Reading Levels vs Comprehension Skills

The conversation we have with our children about a book, before and after their reading, is an excellent way to develop their confidence, fluency and ability to comprehend. Reading comprehension skills increase the enjoyment and effectiveness of reading. These skills help a child’s learning throughout their education and in their personal lives.

Without comprehension, reading is merely following and decoding words on a page. Often children can read a book with 100% accuracy. However, if we ask questions about that book, the child may have missed the important information, meaning or message.

Here at Our Lady of the Rosary School, we want to ensure that students have the skills and understanding to not only read the words on the page, but to develop an understanding beyond the text. Our teachers use the leveled readers in the school only as a tool to give the children opportunities to read, comprehend and enjoy books at the appropriate level. If a leveled reader is too difficult for a child, a child cannot practice or develop these skills. There is also a broad range across each level for a child to refine skills and develop confidence before moving on to the next level. We place the importance of comprehension over the leveled reader each child is on.

PBS4L

Our PBS4L focus over the next few weeks is SAFE AND CARING HANDS. Please take the time to sit with your child and talk about this. What does SAFE AND CARING HANDS look like, feel like and sound like.

PARISH MASS

Join Year One at Parish Mass on Wednesday at 9:15am.

FRUIT BREAK

Every morning the children will have a 5 minute break to eat a piece of fruit, have a drink of water and use the toilets. The children can eat any fresh fruit  (cut up) or vegies (e.g. carrot sticks), fruit stick bars, fruit tubs, fruit in jelly or yoghurt, juice popper etc. It is not the time to have muesli bars or other recess snacks. We encourage healthy eating and it is surprising to see how even resistant fruit eaters change by the end of the year!!

Have a wonderful week!

Term 2, Week 5

Thank you to all the parents who were able to make it to the open classrooms on Friday. It was wonderful to watch the children sharing their learning with you and being able to create an artwork together.

Uniform

All students are to wear their full Winter uniform on Monday next week.

We strongly encourage students to have their jacket in their bags at all times as the weather can turn from hot to cold quickly. Please label all items of clothing as they tend to go missing this time of year!!

Religion Homework

This week we are asking parents to assist the children with our new Religion unit: Stories of Jesus. The children will need to construct a timeline of the major events in their life story, including sacraments. We will be sending home a template on Monday to assist you with this activity. Students will have time in class to share their timeline. Can we ask this is returned to school on or before Monday 22nd May.

Topic Talks

A reminder that topic talks are to be ready for Monday. Children are presenting their talks to their peers during reading groups. To clarify, they are not presenting on the day they have guided reading.

Nightly Reading

Thank you for your continued support with the children and their reading. It is important that the children continue to read every night and work on their sight words. View the above tab “Why I can’t skip reading tonight”. The books should be easy for your child to read. Make it FUN and ENJOYABLE!!!!!!!!  Children will learn to develop a love of reading if they are read to by their parents.

OLOR Teacher/Student Feedback Process

Here at OLOR, we believe that meaningful feedback can greatly enhance learning and improve student achievement. Successful feedback for students allows them to identify their strengths along with areas for development and then plan, with their teacher, the next step in their learning.

An example of a feedback process used at OLOR is from John Hattie, a renowned researcher in education:

The above process creates a positive impact on student learning, because guidance is constantly provided during learning tasks.  Feedback needs to be specific to both acknowledge a child’s effort and/or improvement and give direction for their future endeavours.

Here at OLOR, we use the following feedback techniques:

  • Verbal feedback
  • Peer assessment where students receive positive or helpful advice from their peers
  • Self assessment where teachers guide students to analyse their work to help develop their skills
  • Data walls in the classroom to track student’s growth
  • 1:1 conferencing
  • Written feedback (marking books)
  • Electronic feedback
  • Small group feedback

As you can see written or electronic annotations, while important, are only one aspect of our feedback process.  Therefore, not every piece of written or online work will have teacher comments provided.

There is little evidence to suggest that extensive written comments, often in different coloured pens, have a big impact on pupil progress. In fact, over-marking can take the responsibility away from students, reduce their motivation and make them less resilient. https://www.theguardian.com/teacher-network/2016/may/15/eight-ways-teachers-can-reduce-their-marking-mountain By Ryan Wilson

Better educational outcomes are achieved through varied feedback processes.

Parent Helpers

Thank you to the many parents who have asked to volunteer to help in the classrooms during Reading Groups. Listed are the times that each class has asked for parent helpers. It will either be for reading 1:1 with children or assisting in the class with a group activity. We are asking that if you help in the classroom, to not bring along younger siblings. Thank you for your understanding with this.

Mrs Jeffriess

  • Thursday 9:00am – 9:40am
  • Friday 9:00am – 9:40am

Mrs Earl

  • Wednesday: 11:20am- 11:50am
