General Year One Information

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR YEAR 1 PARENTS

Fruit Break

Every morning the children will have a 5 minute break to eat a piece of fruit, have a drink of water and use the toilets. The children can eat any fresh fruit  (cut up) or vegies (e.g. carrot sticks), fruit stick bars, fruit tubs, fruit in jelly or yoghurt, juice popper etc. It is not the time to have muesli bars or other recess snacks. We encourage healthy eating and it is surprising to see how even resistant fruit eaters change by the end of the year!!

Sport

Sport day is on Tuesday for Year 1. Children are to wear their sport uniform, joggers and hat on this day. Please ensure they have a water bottle as they take this to sport.

Pencil Cases

One pencil case per child. Not too large please. It should contain twist crayons and textas only. Please label all items.

Library

The children have a library lesson each week with Mrs Walter on Tuesday Mornings.

The children borrow 2 books each week on their borrowing day. These books are then returned the next week on Tuesdays.

The children will need to have a Library bag to take home the books and protect them.

Child Protection

We love parent helpers and volunteers BUT as you all realise if you would like to participate in your child’s experiences and learning at school, you must have completed the “Working with children”. This course can be completed online.

Absences

If your child is absent from school, a letter stating the reason for the absence and date needs to be given to your child’s teacher.

This is a legal requirement for the class rolls.

Lateness

We know mornings are often hectic but please be on time for school.

The bell goes at 8.45 am. We start literacy activities in the morning and it is disruptive for your child and others if children are late.

If you are here past 8.45 am you need to walk your child to the office to fill in a late note. Children then walk to the classroom ON THEIR OWN.

Morning

Once the 8:45am bell rings children will walk from the infants playground to the netball courts and sit down in their lines. We kindly ask that parents do not walk with the classes to the classroom in the morning as the children can become unsettled saying goodbye again and seeing parents leave. We encourage building independence with children unpacking their own school bags.

Afternoon Pick up

In the afternoons, we ask you to not wait near the year one classrooms…… if the children see you, they can become unsettled. If you could just wait near the silver picnic benches under the ‘shade sail’ we would appreciate it.

Carpark and silver seat children will form outside Mrs Earl’s classroom and one of the teachers will walk them down to the outside of the hall. Silver Seat children can walk to their parents once the group begins to move off to the hall. The other two teachers will take the OOSH and bus/acres road children to their designated area.

We apologise about all the rules and regulations, but the children’s wellbeing is our top priority.

Visitors Passes

A visitor’s pass must be worn when parents come into the school grounds. Parents sign in at the school office where they will be issued one. This is for the children’s safety.

Parent Details

Please contact the school if your contact details (phone numbers, address etc) change.

Interviews

Formal interviews will be held after reports go home in Term 2.

If you need an interview to discuss any issues-progress, problems, questions, family issues, please send in a letter to your child’s teacher or phone and leave a message with the office. Please inform of the times/ days you are available and a brief outline of the reason for the interview so the teachers can prepare for it. You can also contact us via class emails.

Labelling

Please label ALL articles of clothing and all belongings-lunch box, drink bottle, hats, jackets, pencils, glue etc. We want to save you money!

Assessment

The children will be assessed in all Key Learning Areas throughout the year.

They will receive a written report in Term 2 and Term 4

Formal Interviews are held in Term 2 where parents will be able to discuss their child’s report/progress.

The children will be using the formal grading system that all grades from 1-6 use.

The grades range from E-A. More information will be sent home next term

Observational Survey

All Year One children will be assessed in their Literacy Skills during Term 1 and Term 4 as required by the Parramatta Diocese. The children had assessments done last year that were similar. The classroom teachers will be completing these assessments at school.

MAI

All students will be assessed in Numeracy. The focus of this assessment will be the four number domains (Counting, Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, and Multiplication and Division). This is completed at the beginning Term 1.

Exclusions from Sport

If your child is unable to participate fully in sport at any time, a letter needs to be written to the sports teachers stating the reason.

Nut Products

To make our school a safe environment we ask that all parents ensure that nut products are not included in your child’s lunch box.

Please check the labelling-if it says-“may contain traces of nuts or seeds” it is fine to send in.

We do have a few children with anaphylaxis to nuts in Year One.

Birthdays

We are very happy to celebrate your child’s birthday.

Please help us by sending in items* that are easy to distribute to the class like cup cakes, chocolate crackles, lollies, donuts, ice blocks,  etc.

Please don’t send in cakes that need to be cut up.

*31 students in 1 Gold

*27 students in 1White and 1 Blue

Raincoats

Could all parents please ensure that your child has a raincoat (labelled) in their bags.

On wet day’s children put them on before being dismissed…we all know that it always rains/ storms at 3.00pm!!!! We will help them put these on before dismissal.

No umbrellas are to be brought to school. This is a matter of safety.

Toilet

Please encourage your child to go to the toilet before school as many children are missing vital input in the first session. Children will be allowed to go to the bathroom if they need to, but they will be encouraged by teachers to go at fruit break, recess and lunch.

If your child does have a medical problem in this area please inform their class teacher.

Please make sure that you put a spare pair of undies in their school bag as accidents happen a lot….they are still only little and often leave it until the last minute.

Lunches

Please pack your child’s lunch in a labelled lunch box.

Students eat their lunch with their class teacher each day.

We monitor as best as we can!! Leftovers will always be sent home so that you know what they have eaten. However, if lunch boxes are coming home with still a significant amount of food left on a daily basis, please let us know so we can monitor those children.

Lunches are kept inside classrooms.

RECESS– Please pack your child’s recess in a labelled paper bag or seperate container. We store these separately from their lunches.
